This cherry wood coffee table is about 3 foot square was so fun to make! Although I have not worked with cherry before, I found it easy to work with and stunning; just look at that top which was stained in Red Mahogany and finished with a water based poly! The top opens to reveal plenty of storage and stays up with a dual function locking mechanism and soft close.
Black walnut end table
This end table has not one but two cross cut black walnut slabs! The top is oval shaped and measures about 3 by 2 feet. See the owl? The shelf is about a foot in diameter. Both had the bark removed and are finished with tung oil. The base is fabricated from poplar and painted black. Very modern.
BLACK WALNUT COFFEE TABLE
This coffee table project has a two inch thick black walnut table top made up wide, darker hardwood boards (no lighter colored sap wood). Many coats of tung oil were used to bring out the natural beauty of the wood and leave a mirror finish. The hardwood base is painted black and slightly distressed. The design size and details help to ensure that the piece fits perfectly with its surroundings.
Black walnut coffee table
This black walnut coffee table has a top that is about 2 inches thick and measures 4 feet by 18 inches. The wood was selected to include and intertwine both the darker hardwood and the lighter sapwood. Narrower two inch wood pieces were used for a more dramatic effect and framed like a picture. The tung oil finish is exquisitely smooth. The hardwood base has a shelf (with a hidden center support) and is finished in black with several coats of water based polyurethane.
Black Walnut crosscut END TABLE
This crosscut piece is overflowing with character. It is about 18" at the widest part and 2" thick. The crack has been filled with clear epoxy and is now completely stable. The piece is finished with tung oil and has four 1/4" black rod legs.
Cedar Beam End Table
Friends remodeled their back patio and included large cedar beams in the design. With two feet leftover, I sawed the beam into 5" thick pieces which are "book matched" for the glue up. Unlike the walnut table from above, I kept the cracks open and I really like the look! The left picture is unfinished and while the right was wet to simulate what a finish might look like. I made sure to keep the original edges of the beam in the final product.
End tables with Storage
These end tables have plenty of storage are painted with a water based poly finish. Plywood top, shelf, and sides for strength. Reclaimed lumber framework connected with mortise and tenons.
